Tribology is the study of friction, wear and lubrication as observed in a system. Any time two surfaces slide past one another in intimate contact friction will be created and wear will occur. Since every engineering system is subject to wear, significant research has been conducted to minimize its effect. Wear behavior is assessed by stress analysis, material properties and surface geometry. Lubricants to prevent wear vary widely and must be matched to the system they are intended to help.
